somebody set up us the bomb !
in A.D. 1945 war was ending...
captain: what happen ?
mechanic: somebody set up us the bomb !
60 years ago today, the world's first nuclear device was detonated outside of los alamos, new mexico. this bomb, of course, was the precursor to the hiroshima and nagasaki bombs used a month later.
now, i consider myself to be conservative when it comes to politics, but i am in no way a proponent of nuclear war. i quote albert einstein:
"i do not know with what weapons world war III will be fought, but world war IV will be fought with sticks and stones."
it makes it quite clear that a nuclear war would be the be-all-end-all of wars, and it would destroy civilization and humanity as we know it. sounds like a lot of fun, right?
like a lot of people, i chat online using IRC. one of the channels im usually in is predominantly european. one thing they pointed out the other day is that america is the only country to have ever used atomic weapons in warfare. im not very proud of that fact, but granted, using the bombs was a better way of ending the war in the pacific, rather than the planned Operation Downfall in which case there would have been well over one million american casualties and just as many japanese casualties. but still, all out nuclear war is a frightening prospect.
so yeah. happy birthday to the nuke.
